Title: VU is 10 Years Old
Post by: Charley on January 01, 2019, 08:53:17 am: To say that this is a strange topic to write is a huge understatement. I can't quite believe that what started out as 2 people, and grew into a huge online community, is still going after ten years.

I'm going to quote from our clan ethos, something that has remained officially private since it was written out formally in 2012 (although I'm sure it's been viewed by outsiders).

This clan was formed to create two things.

First, the strongest group of fighters in VC:MP. At the end of the day, this is a DM clan. If you can't fight, then learn. If you can fight, then teach. Do not lose sight of the fact that we are here to kick ass.

Second, a group of friendly people who are welcoming to newbies. I've seen a lot of people say 'It doesn't matter if you can fight or not, VU's about being a cool guy not about fighting.' This isn't quite right. The clan is about being cool and friendly, but it's also about fighting. Our theory has always been 'if you can speak English and you're not an asshole but you can't fight, then sure you can join. We can teach you to fight.' Everyone can learn to fight, not everyone can learn to be a good person.

It's important that we remember that the goal is to make a team of people who can pwn anyone who comes our way, but that is also humble, kind and fun.

I can honestly say that these were the two core intentions behind VU, and I can honestly say that I think together we have achieved them year after year after year.

The one thing I would perhaps modify is 'Not everyone can learn to be a good person'. This was written when we expected to hold onto members for a year or two maximum, and wouldn't take a significant place in their life. We thought it out of the purview of our engagement to make any meaningful difference to how anyone saw the world beyond the game, and how to interact with others.

We were wrong. We had no idea this thing would last ten years. What we've seen, in fact, is a whole host of people who have been able to use their experiences in VC:MP, with VU as their guides, and improve their personal attitudes. I always thought that VC:MP, and the community around it, was like a mini life-simulator. We get to adopt certain responsibilities and powers, and are given voices, way before it's possible in real life. And the process of navigating these responsibilities, powers, voices and the relationships that tie them together allows us to learn things about how the real world works. I can't count the number of people who have openly stated 'VU changed my life', and I am among them. VU changed my life.

When I think about VU, I also think about the extended community that surrounds it. We've been incredibly fortunate to have a lot of supporters over the years, and ultimately they have outnumbered the people who wanted to see us fail. We wanted to create a platform where the whole community could get together through events, servers, and forum chat, and that relies on people continually coming here and contributing their thoughts. So thank you to everyone who has been involved.

While the whole VU family is incredibly important, I'd like to single out a few people in particular who I think have had a foundational impact on VU, and certainly my journey in the clan.

aXXo - you were there with me from the very beginning. We met in MK and you agreed to follow me out into this new adventure. Endlessly creative, intelligent, insightful, funny, and kick-ass ingame, you're a cornerstone of this clan. Although our periods of activity rarely overlapped, we held it strong over the years and I'm so happy to see you're still here.

Thijn - what can I say dude? You are truly unique in VC:MP - resourceful, helpful, committed, level-headed and insanely generous. Even barely stepping ingame for years, you've maintained the clan vision and stepped in with authoritative insights whenever you've felt it's necessary. You are VU to the bone.

Knucis - my original partner in crime when growing and maintaining the clan in its first couple of years, VU wouldn't exist without you. You provided the motivation and support to continue even when things were at their worst, and you never let our (previous) mountain of enemies bother you - you truly didn't give a fuck about them, because you understood the clan vision from the word go.

TheKing - you're one of the truest leaders in VC:MP. From day 1 of knowing you, I've been bowled over by how kind and inviting you are to newbies, how good you are at steering people in the right direction, and how you understood the concept of open recruitment, against the backdrop of the then-elitist VC:MP orthodoxy. Beyond that, you're wicked fun. I'm delighted that you came back.

GangstaRas - in my eyes you've been the king of VC:MP for a few years now. For the first couple of years I thought you would fade away, given your long periods of absence, but true to your word you came back every summer, and brought with you all the enthusiasm, commitment and dedication that you started with. Now you sit at the top of the game, making outstanding events and acting as a true role-model for everyone in the clan and those in the community too. Simply put, you're a hero dude.

Veteran - my VC:MP soulmate. What can I say dude? You're the VUest of them all. Your ability to not get wrapped up in all the drama bullshit, and just play the god damn game, has always brought us down to earth. Many of us sometimes forget that VC:MP is supposed to be a fun shooting game, you never do. Consistently one of the friendliest, most skillful and admirable members of this community.

Wilson - you're fucking insane and I love it. Every team needs one person who will just go balls-to-the-wall crazy to defend everyone else. If anyone comes close to harming VU, you don't give a fuck about your personal reputation, you go after them with everything you've got. It's been a tumultuous few years for you in the clan, and we're all better off for them.

Ferrari32 - much like Veteran, you serve as a constant reminder to just shut the fuck up and play. You give an old school edge to clan discussions and plays, cutting through bullshit with hardline stances informed by sharp insight. I've been particularly impressed with your habit of choosing a few trainees who a lot of people don't have faith in, but seeing something in them, and guiding them in the right direction. You will defend them against the rest of the clan, and usually you are right. You can spot talent where others can't.

Stormeus - wherever the fuck you are, for years you provided a voice of measured reason, completely in line with VU principles. Like Thijn, you rarely strayed ingame, but you nevertheless dedicated hundreds of hours to helping the clan run smoothly, and guiding people in the right direction when it came to making decisions.

Siezer & Joker - I've put you two together because I think of you as two of the people who seriously continued the VU vision when some of us older guys became less involved. You both have inspiring individual stories, and have come to define what being a VU is for the new generation of members.

Of course I could go on and on, but I will leave it there for now. All I can say is that I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who's been a part of this great community over the years. I can't see it lasting another ten years, but I could be wrong.

I'd like to encourage anyone to share their thoughts/reflections/experiences of VU over the ten years in this topic.

Every member here from Trainee to Rookie, from Rookie to Full Member thought me US something that we couldn't teach ourselves most of them were how to deal with situations where you didn't know where to go or what to do (maybe i am not making sense but i am emotional at the moment give me a break plz)

OK that was maximum effort after all @Charley, i am here every fucking day to defend VU like i am at border alone with heavy machine gun facing 10000000000 enemies together, no one ever gonna cross this line until i am breathing.

VU is like a family and it'll never end even if VCMP dies. <3 <3

Now I have taken a different way, and my relations with VU members are almost broken, but I will not forget that was VU the clan which had courage and comprehension to accept a guy that was always hated everywhere in a try to teach me the real meaning of many things.

My short time in VU was enough to recognize one of the best clans in VCMP. The guys I mostly appreciated were JOoOoo,
Charley, Ferrari and Siezer.

I hope VU lives for much more years, and keeps developing players with true potential in a based-on-values environment.

From the first VUs whom I met were WiLsOn (my best friend and he knows well that ;D) SMD, blitz and many others whom I had fun in the family. I fell that I improved a lot in life and one of the significant reasons VU's experience. I am enjoying my career and I will never get bored as long as I am VU. If every VU really knows how I love this family since I joined the clan, he would be happy a lot and amazed. I am still feel a great prosperity coming on and we'll keep waiting for it and do whatever thing that will lead us to its achievement.

When I first started playing VC:MP, I wasn't this fluent in English. I was a complete dickhead, and raged like an idiot.
I was around 12 years old when I first played VC:MP. It took a few years before I started having interest in clans, and ArS was probably the first thing online I felt welcome in. It felt like a family. It was the first clan who saw potential in me.

Then I left... I can't exactly remember why, but studies and exams were surely related (My parents took away my laptop when I was suppose to study for exams, which I know was the right thing to do when I look back at it).
Then I came back and VU was born. It was like I was reunited with my beloved family.
Scripting and making servers with Knucis was most of what I did back then. Played a lot on XE, played a lot on GameSparks RPG, played a lot on The Ultimate Stunting Server (Or GameSparks stunting server, don’t remember which one came first), and later on SvM.

I don’t quite remember when I became bored of the game and didn’t play that much any more, but to this day I love the community (With their ups and down) and I enjoy making fun stuff for it in my spare time. Keeping a forum up and running which, I can say with complete confidence, is the corner stone of the VC:MP community is exciting and feels good. People from all kinds of clans, playing on a lot of different servers, coming from a lot of different countries and continents all come to our forum to hang around. I’m proud of that. I’m proud our clan has grown to the important role it has today.

VU has shaped me. Taught me to enjoy the game, even when you’re being pwned. Be kind to people, even if they’re not. Respect people, so they will respect you back. Welcome people into the community, and clan. Help people when they need help. Be there for people when they need someone to talk to or ask for an opinion.
Overall, VU has taught me to be a good person. Something I believe I have become in real life, and be forever grateful of.

These two in particular strike me significantly as, to my own perception of them, I feel like a better description could have not been written.

Veteran - the one who unawarely weighed down the most on my change of mind which resulted in my application here, and ironically hasn't been around time before I joined. What influenced me was his positive attitude in game: never raging, always spreading good mood, yet a good fighter and smart motherfucker that didn't lack the ability to respond at people with witty comebacks. Ferrari32 - The one whom I wasn't particularly fond of in terms of attitude. It took me way long to realise beneath his coarseness and straight-to-the-point attitude there is more: a man loyal to the core and generous to those who deserve it. Nonetheless the only VU captain, and with time I also learnt to appreciate his hardline, understood a person like him is absolutely needed in the family and can't imagine his place being anywhere else.

Its funny cuz I remember it all like it was yesterday....the true symptom of we're getting really old.

Never saw myself making an online family, and having deep meaningful friendships with people across the world. The hell am I doing rooting with Ferr for Croatia in FIFA 2018? The hell am I doing congratulating Tony on his wedding and making a photoalbum art for his wedding pics? (I'll get it done I promise). The hell am I doing asking real life assistance here on donations to my friend who's house burnt down last year? Or for some votes so that a friend of mine's charity could win (which he did thanks to you all) the needed money to continue their services? It never even crossed my mind back in the day that life would go this way...

I was just here for fun but VC:MP has developed me in ways I never imagined, quite the outlet for some of my most creative pieces. From the VW3 banner I won, to the VU banner you see today, from those adverts of VCDC, to VCDC banner itself, then to the banners of VW6, 7 and now 8, then to the directing and modeling of bikes, flags, maps and objects, never did I see myself developing like this, all out of love to VU and my appreciation to the fun Ive had and the respect I have for this platform, the community that I grew up with. As long as Im available, and as long as I can keep the passion alive in my fellow old folks, I'll never let VC:MP die as my thank you to VU. A good family really brings out the best in you.

I tell you its surreal what a simple interaction can lead to. Totally indebt to TheKing for opening the door. Charley summed it up best his role, if it wasn't for him, VU would've dodged me completely and the world of VC:MP would at this point be a different place most likely. Not a lot of VUs left from the 2009 era but for everyone of us that found a way to stick around for so long, its enough to keep me coming back too, truly.

In 2015 I joined Skywars DM server (I played VC:MP before but can't remember anything important so I guess my story starts here), when I joined all I wanted was to drive a tank. You needed $5000 to use a tank and the server gave you $3500 after register if I remember correctly, every kill granted you $300, I just needed 5 kills without dying to drive my precious Rhino but I was too noob for that. After several attempts I just registered another account and gave myself the money just to get killed while driving the tank ::). But leaving my story in Skywars for another post, I met some VUs there (Most of them aren't VUs anymore) Gohan, Bart, Hotdogcat, Angela, Sevrin and Freak. I was wondering what the [VU] thing in their nicks was but didn't even need to ask because someone (I don't remember who) mentioned a clan thing.

Trying to join

In january 2016 after a little research I found VU forum, the first thing I did was creating an account (I had to ask Hotdogcat about the Haxor, Noob and Charley question :P) and then I applied using Google Translator, got denied because I wasn't ready. Tried a week later and I wasn't ready yet (Saying it this way seems like something funny to me). Even when I was a noob who didn't really know people from VU apart from hotdogcat, I decided that it was the clan I wanted to join. The first thing I need to do was...

Meeting VUs

I tried to look for the server where most VUs played and found Evolution A/D. I started playing there but my english was too bad to talk with someone so I decided to play with them silently (I used to take the RC plane every round ;D). I met Wilson, Veteran, Jokah, Shawn and Ferrari but couldn't even talk with them. After a month, I decided to apply again (It was march). I got 2 positive votes and then Ferrari tried to meet me ingame, we tried to have a talk but I couldn't really understand what he was saying and it seems the same was happening to him. My app got denied again but I didn't feel bad because, I had made a progress.

Improving

I remember that year, my parents were trying to convince me to learn english saying it would be useful for my future. I didn't want to do it because I thought it was useless. After getting denied in VU for the third time, I understood that I needed to learn english if I wanted to be able to communicate with most of VUs. I decided to start taking lessons with a friend of mine who's studying to be an english professor (He's actually 8 years older than me). After 3 months, I decided to apply again in June, this time I got 7 trainee and 11 Deny. My app got denied again but I knew that time would be the last.

Getting accepted

After 2 months of english lessons and playing in A/D and LW, I decided to apply again. In July 27, 2016 I got accepted. I felt really happy, I could finally be part of the clan I was being loyal even before being a member. It was just the start of a story I should leave for another post. I'll just say that I learned a lot of things after joining VU.

Thanks to VU, I understood the importance of learning english (and I would like to learn other languages too). Now I get 10/10 in every exam at school, I even decided to take a Cambridge exam getting 155/170 in the PET, now I'm heading for the First Certificate. I made a lot of friends and met a lot of people. Learnt that it wasn't about age but attitude and maturity (I lied about my age when applied :P). Learnt some things about responsibility and honesty. (I have learnt more things but I don't want to make a list about it.)

I also wanted to help the community and within the things I could do, I started translating VW information topics to spanish. I don't know why but since the day I joined VU, I feel I have completed a lot more goals I had compared to the time before it happened so I feel like it has helped me a lot.

Its very difficult to put into words the appreciation I have for this clan and this game, the only way of expressing it are my definite comeback. I always thought I would leave and never appear again and here I am, celebrating a decade of Vice Underdogs.

Fun fact, VU is turning 10 and so are Thijn, GangstaRas and I in this clan. Gang in october, Thijn and I at the end of June. Its incredible to last this long.

VU, showed us lots of stuff. There are so many we can't name them all. But as I always say to our young ones, everything with hard word, dedication and respectfulness will indeed make you in a near future BETTER in what you are trying to accomplish. Don't give up. Charley mention some of us, but we all as a family help each an everyday. With something so simple as a dumb comment on forum or WhatsApp group you can light up someones day. Rest assure that I will always put my VU family before anything in this game.

Now speaking to the rest of the VC:MP community. You guys are awesome, without many of you VU and VC:MP wouldn't made it this far. Thank you for making this the go-to forum of VC:MP. Thank you for the rivalries, and for the people that are allies and share our vision. At the end of the day we all work towards one same goal. Many of you are great leaders in this community and some are working towards that way. If we lasted this long in a 02 game, we can sure as hell last 10 more. Like I said in my previous paragraph, DON'T GIVE UP. Lets be real leaders and push this for as many years as we possibly can.

Now, I'm starting to share a new view with different players, who didn't use to be familiar to me, but now they are, like WiLsOn, La[Z]eR, DiaZ, Thomas, Amal or EvilSpirit.

I don't know, if this month was like this, how would it be in this young year ^-^ 8)

It is true that VU did have an impact on some of us at some point IRL. As Charley said, the responsibilities I was given here, the stages I went through(Trainee, Rookie, Full) taught me a bunch of stuff, taught me how things work, this community at some point is the reason why my English is what it is now, it taught me how to not become a butthurt, it taught me to become a better and mature person, all these ups and downs I went through had taught me alot. It gave me experience on how to handle situations, I am even better at it as I went through the most of them myself. VU did not only shape me into a better player, but it had an impact on me morally. This community keeps you in situations that you never think of doing at this stage IRL. What I mean is, this community shapes you not only into a better player but in a better person. The majority of the clan were all noobs, most of us started from the very bottom, and went through what most of the newbies in VCMP right now are going through. The best part of this clan, is that it sees potential in each and every player it comes accross, when you get denied here, you don't just get denied, you are given the points you should work on. This is what keeps majority of those who apply gives them courage to apply again. Another best quality of VU is that it doesn't only see potential in players, but it sees potential in the game itself. Our members work hard on the events that are conducted every year, and their core objective is that each and every player participating has fun.

On a sidenote; at some point VCMP is still not at its full potential, 90% of the servers you see in the game are openworld DM based, we do have a few unique gamemodes like VCCNR, RTV, EAD, and etc. But there's much more VCMP can do, so that is why playing is not what I only do, I and Xmair have assembled a group of people with a goal of bringing VCMP to its full potential, we won't go in greater detail now until the next 2-3 months, but its something the VCMP community needs.

I am always on and off with in-game activity but visiting forum and reading posts is kinda my hobby now. This is a hell of a milestone for VU. I still remember when VU started decade ago many of clans out there use to make memes and VU was considered small fish and this is where small fish is today(strong and united) and those big fishes didn’t survived for long, you old fellas know what I mean by this. VU always welcomed newbies and helped them in improving which makes VU unique. We are kicking good and will kick harder in coming years. Hope to see every one of you in the topic VU 20 YEARS OLD. Everyone has a prosperous new year.

10 years is a long time. I remember when I started to play (almost 7 years ago) and I met the members of this clan first time. They have always been kind to me, even when I was a noob with poor English and bad skill. I'm glad that I could meet people like Veteran, Wilson, Ferrari and many, many other who have been or still are in this clan. I wish you all the best, not only in the game, but also and main in real life.
