I think the most uncomfortable example of this is Michael Jackson. He was definitely an abusive paedophile rapist (anyone who thinks otherwise is either deluded or ignorant), and now listening to some of his best songs, it's hard because they can quite easily be intepreted as being about fucking kids.
Take one of his most famous songs, PYT. Here are some lyrics:
I want to love you (P.Y.T.)
Pretty young thing
You need some loving (T.L.C.)
Tender love and care
And I'll take you there, yes, I will, yes, I will
I want to love you (P.Y.T.)
Pretty young thing
You need some loving (T.L.C.)
Tender love and care
And I'll take you there
Yes, I will, hee-eh
Pretty young thing, UH!
You make me sing, ha, ha, ha
Pretty young thing, UH!
You make me sing, ha, ha, ha
Don't Stop Til You Get Enough:
Keep on, with the force don't stop
Don't stop 'til you get enough
Keep on, with the force don't stop
Don't stop 'til you get enough
Touch me and I feel on fire
Ain't nothin' like a love desire (ooh)
I'm melting (I'm melting) like hot candle wax
Sensation (ah sensation) lovely where we're at (ooh)
So let love take us through the hours
I won't be complainin' (ooo)
'Cause this is love power (ooh)
Keep on, with the force don't stop
Don't stop 'til you get enough
It's so on the nose. Same with Rock With You and a bunch of others.
I honestly don't know how to feel about separating art from artist in this case. Do I still play these tunes when I DJ? Yup. Do I feel uncomfortable about it? Yup.
