Information and News / What is VCDC?

The Vice City Dueling Championship is an idea that was first devised by [VU]aXXo in 2009. Since then, we have had three successful tournaments with 40 competitors each and it is time for the fourth. Anyone is free to join (aside from known hackers); there are no clan restrictions.

The tournament will contain the following stages:

Group Stages
12 groups consisting of five players each will play a round-robin tournament, similar to the World Cup. The top two players from each group will advance. No eliminations occur until the end of this entire stage.

Terrible Twenty-Four
Six matches will be played between various members of the final twenty-four. The top eight scoring players from this stage will advance. No eliminations occur until the end of this entire stage.

Elimination
An elimination round with quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals.

To apply to the tournament go here.

After the applications have been closed, groups will be decided by using random seeding in order to ensure fair matching of players and a good distribution of skilled players.

Details about how each stage will work will be released in the relevant forum board. This will be an ongoing event, it will not be on a particular day. Matches can be fought at any time, on any server, as long as an admin is present.

For the rules click here. For the list of admins click here.

For an overview of the last three seasons, so you can know what to expect, click here.

Please join us on IRC, our channel is #VCDC on LUNet.

We are also looking for some people to administrate the event. If you are interested, please go here.

Information and News / Tournament Rules
« on: July 06, 2015, 05:08:35 am »
Rules and Regulations

Gameplay
  • The following are grounds for immediate tournament disqualification:
    • Death evasion by /q
    • Non-visual game modifications (e.g. map edits)
    • Trainers or other cheating aids
  • Ping must be below 400ms, and FPS must be between 20 and 60fps. The server will automatically kick participants who do not abide by this.
    • If you are kicked more than three times for high/jittery ping or more than twice for a too low/high FPS, you will forfeit the match.
  • Rounds may be continued if a player times out or crashes.
  • The following weapons are banned:
    • All melee weapons
    • Grenades, molotovs, tear gas and rocket launcher
    • Spaz
    • Minigun
    • Flamethrower
  • Using an M4 or M60 in first-person mode is not allowed.

Organization
  • Do not stop fighting until your opponent is dead or an admin tells you to stop.
    • Unless agreed to by both fighters, quitting in the middle of a round is a forfeit. Forfeits are an automatic win for all three sets, regardless of match progress.
    • Forfeiting a match more than once will result in disqualification.
  • An admin must be present at all matches or the results are not valid.
  • Players may choose their server, but any hindrances caused by network issues, location, or other players will not be considered grounds for a rematch.
  • Failure to complete matches by any posted deadline will result in either a decision being made based on existing scores, or disqualification.
  • Quitting the tournament with two or more matches played will result in all other scheduled matches becoming forfeits. Quitting the tournament with one match played will be handled at the admin team's discretion.

VC:MP General / Playing VC:MP the wrong way
« on: July 05, 2015, 07:54:06 am »
This is a rant that you probably don't care about so don't complain about it later.

Recommended reading that's probably better than this crap:
http://rjbs.manxome.org/rubric/entry/2083

So as a developer, I don't really have the chance to actually play VC:MP; for every 10 hours I put into it, I probably get one hour of play time (which does not include me joining servers to test fixes or new features). Even then, if I join on my regular nick, there's probably a 99% chance someone is going to ask me a tech support question about not being able to reach the masterlist, report some random bug, or ask me to add peds.

I started getting back into VC:MP by using alternate nicknames so this doesn't happen when I want to play a quick DM session. However, I also suck, and I mean I really suck. I play on a trackpad so my tracking is atrocious if I try to shoot at long ranges, and I can't lead-aim for my life so I tend to get destroyed in stubby duels. This is unfortunate because the "official" pro player loadout seems to be a stubby, an M4, a TEC-9 and a laser rifle, and no matter how much I practice, I don't get much better.

That said, while on my alt a while ago, I decided to use the army skin on LW, the most stereotypical "noob" skin, second only to the Tommy skin. Not only that, but against VU's storied history as the "Anti-Roofing, Anti-Spazzing" clan, I flew over to Downtown, landed across the street from the police spawn, and roofed like hell. I got most of my kills by waiting for people to be knocked down by shotguns and then stealing other people's kills.

I got a few people complaining about how much of an idiot I must be for not using the sacred shotgun and having a "real" fight. I thought that I'd probably be upset too if I kept getting killed by someone roofing with an M60, but then I realized — who gives a shit?

Probably the most annoying part about VC:MP to me is the insistence on being "honorable" even though literally nobody follows this. Getting killed while typing a sin of the highest order and using the Spaz is so low effort that you might as well kill yourself. Still, that round is probably the most fun I'd had playing VC:MP in a long while because it was something that I was comfortable with.

People tend to get all pissy about not having a "real" fight, but now I'm pretty sure that VC:MP would be way too boring without having people playing with different strategies. The sense of urgency from fighting a 6v1 or having to deal with a roofer, a carkiller, and a guy with a shotgun all at once is actually pretty fun once you ignore the idea of some guy playing the wrong way by using their car. It's petty, and you don't get paid based on your K/D ratio anyway.

(Which isn't to say there aren't bad ways of playing VC:MP. Map mods, hacks, and playing with an unplayable low FPS or high ping is ridiculous, no one wants to see you warping your way across the map.)

If people want to play competitively and only have to deal with people using the M4 and a stubby, that's their choice, and they're free to find a server that respects that. However, spewing garbage about how there are only three real weapons in the game and everything else is BS that should be banned is some bullshit in itself.

If you're the type of person who does this, stop. You're basically telling people that their way of having fun is wrong and that fun is only allowed the way you do it. No one enjoys it and you're probably pissing yourself off over nothing. Pick something that's comfortable with you, switch it up if you want. Just stop crying every time a guy with a spaz drives by on top of a car and find a way to defend yourself against that instead. Maybe you'll actually enjoy yourself then.

VC:MP General / Littlewhitey's Elo Rating Scoreboard
« on: June 18, 2015, 11:46:29 am »
I spent probably too much time making this so I figured I'd share.

Quote
http://elo.vicelegends.com/

What is this?
This is an unofficial, objectively calculated scoreboard for Littlewhitey's. An IRC bot listens to the echo channel on IRC for kills and deaths, and uses the Elo rating system for scoring people. This site has a Top 25 list, small profiles, and signatures. It also only knows about kills and deaths performed since the bot started running.

Important Note!! If something goes wrong with this, do not annoy the LW staff about it. They have literally nothing to do with it.

What does that mean? (How are scores calculated?)
By default, all players start with a score of 1000.

Essentially, whenever a player is killed, the rating algorithm takes each player's score and tries to "predict" who would win based on the difference. This is then used to calculate the amount of points to award to the winning player. These points are subtracted from the score of the losing player.

Because of the nature of the algorithm, less points are awarded to players who were almost guaranteed a win (e.g. a skilled player killing someone who doesn't know where the fire button is). Conversely, it is more valuable to kill players as skilled or more skilled than you.

This makes this into something of a perpetual ladder match.

Why?
For fun.

How come I'm not on here/my profile doesn't exist?
As mentioned above, the bot only knows about players who appeared since it first started. If you play again, you'll see a profile appear for you.

I'll be glad to answer any questions I definitely missed so far.

A unique script does not guarantee a player base. Imagine a server streaming epileptic music, with players firing Miniguns glued to Linerunners driving around with nitro boost on zero gravity. I'd rather play on the blank game mode.

VC:MP General / A Taste of Lag
« on: May 31, 2015, 10:29:39 pm »

In case you ever wanted to see what it was like to lag badly from the perspective of a lagger.

This is was the worst case scenario for a connection on LW's I think. I recorded myself playing with an artificial 600-700 ping with random chances of packet loss, throttling, and out of order packets. This was as far as I could go without getting kicked for lagging like shit or triggering the server's anticheat. I hope someone else recorded me playing like this. If not, expect a part two.

Almost immediately after I finished recording this, AdTec lowered the ping limit from 750 to 500 so WE DID IT.

This is your annual opportunity to tell me how much more you liked 0.3 because your lag was an advantage.

EDIT: This is now the annual ego boosting thread.

Information and FAQs / VW4: Final Preparations and Updates
« on: August 22, 2014, 03:26:36 am »

As of the time of this posting, merely 20 hours remain until Vice War IV begins. As we clean up and prepare for the event, we'd like to post a few reminders and changes for all participants.

Event Date and Time

Quote
Vice War will be held starting on Saturday, August 23 at 00:01 UTC and ending on Sunday, August 24 at 00:01 UTC.

If you do not know when this is in your local timezone, here is a countdown:
http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/to?iso=20140823T000001&p0=1440&msg=Vice+War+IV&csz=1

This countdown is accurate regardless of what timezone you are in.

Game Rules

Remember to familiarize yourself with the rules of the event:
http://vu.vrocker-hosting.co.uk/index.php?topic=5230.msg61397#msg61397

Server Info

The server is being hosted on maxorator's Public Beta box at 188.165.123.242:8192. The server will unlock automatically once the event has begun.

If you are having trouble reaching the server, please inform a staff member ASAP.

More information about the gamemode can be found in this thread:
http://vu.vrocker-hosting.co.uk/index.php?topic=5343.msg62480#msg62480

IRC

Our IRC echo channel is #ViceWar.echo on irc.liberty-unleashed.co.uk. If you've been in this channel the past week or so as preparations have been underway, you may have noticed the echo bots join, but not respond to anything.

IRC bots are now responsive and commands can be seen using the !cmds command. Prepending messages in the channel with . also acts the same as using !say.

The ability to speak in the IRC channel is a privilege that can be revoked at any time by banning you. Spamming the echo channel or otherwise causing problems will result in you being removed.

Updates on bases and team points will only begin to appear once the event has started.

Voice Communications: Mumble Server

As a service to all players, a Mumble server is being hosted for Vice War which either team is welcome to use, and password-protected team channels are available for use.

See this thread for more details:
http://vu.vrocker-hosting.co.uk/index.php?topic=5344.msg62482#msg62482

Details have already been provided to Red Team members.

Blue Team, if you would like access, please have a representative PM me to retrieve your team channel's password. I will not be adding myself to the Blue Team's forum group to post it, in order to avoid accusations of espionage.

Have Fun!

This event has absolutely no real competitive bearing, it's just a friendly contest to unite members of the VC:MP community and have a good time. Certainly use strategy so that your team comes out on top, but do not take it too seriously.

Information and FAQs / Welcome Back to Vice War
« on: August 14, 2014, 05:05:35 am »

Sorry for the lack of information over the past month, but as Revolver already explained, we could not have anticipated the widespread inactivity we dealt with over the past month. With that being said, we have new information to announce.

Event Date and Time
"Admin, when Vice War is happen?"

This being a question people have been wondering since Vice War was announced, we're glad to finally have an answer for you guys.

Vice War will be held starting on Saturday, August 23 at 12:01am GMT and ending on Sunday, August 24 at 12:01am GMT.

Gamemode and Hosting

Due to administrative and public interest, Vice War 4 will be hosted on the VC:MP 0.4 beta on maxorator's beta box. 0.4 has reached a point where it is more stable for an event of this scale than 0.3, and we believe it will generate considerable community interest in 0.4.

However, this is not a public beta. As such, features will not be added for the purpose of showing off; the core gameplay is exactly the same as it was in 0.3. This also provides an opportunity for players to focus specifically on improving their combat skills with 0.4's improved sync.

If you have not already, download the beta client:
http://v04.maxorator.com/files/VCMP04_Installer.zip

Your browser will automatically download and install the appropriate client version upon joining the game server if you do not already have it.

More information on the 0.4 Public Beta can be found on the Squirrel forum:
http://vcmp.liberty-unleashed.co.uk
