Bruh did I miss anything ?
Duuuude, have you been living under a rock? HL:Alyx is amazing! It's a prequel for HL2, with some revelations at the end :) - I won't spoil much after that.

-------

something interesting that Newell said in an interview. We simply didn't have the technology available at the time to make the game we wanted Half Life to be.
From some interviews with some current and ex-Valve employees, their "business philosophy" was that each employee chose which project they worked on, and are, somewhat, free to start their own. As you can tell, this has its pros and cons. The initial team of HL2:ep3 development was always changing scopes, projects & interests faded, so lots of man-power was lost at that time to actually finish the game. And since a lot of other original titles were being developed (Portal, TF2, L4D, L4D2, Portal 2, DoTA2), the development simply didn't happen. Eventually a lot of time passed and indepentent teams within Valve started prototyping their own version of the game, but it never actually flourished... Artifact was actually  developed with this practice - apparently there are loads of developers there that enjoyed card games at the time.

The focus on VR from Valve's part, and the notion that HL was always developed to show new technologies (HL1 - showcasing FPS narrative, HL2 - showcasing source engine, realism in game & physics, HL:Alyx (and eventually HL3) - showcasing the full potential of a AAA game design for VR), it was the perfect time for them to once again regain a little bit of focus unto the series.

But yeah, I don't think anyone was expecting HL2:ep3 to be a huge revolutionary technology game (that would be expected from HL3, as you're saying), we just wanted the god damn narrative to not end in a cliffhanger :(

we might actually see a sequel at some point in time.
Hehehehehe, you haven't seen the after credits of HL:Alyx have you? :D Won't spoil, but you might be happy :)

*bump*

Have been reading my past posts to find something to post on the "out of context VC:MP", and god this thread didn't age well. I can proudly say I was wrong on some points :D - HL:Alyx is awesome. Can't wait for HL3, even though it was kind of a retcon.

I'll fucking kill Valve if they break my heart again with 10+ years of silence :(

You can't call them cunts. They made half-life and they are free if they whether want to finish it or not. I am sure they have reasons for ep3 delay.
I can if that's what they are now... Remember they tried to sell mods alongside Bethesda. They announced a game that literally no one asked for.

Valve is no longer the community driven game company they once were. All they care right now is making money off Steam, even if it means ripping off the developers who publish their games there for money. Though I am hoping this backfires hard against them, and they shift their current business model.

Half-Life was great, and huge respect for that, but don't let that fool you, there is an old Valve, and a new Valve.

Valve, we used to make games... Now we make money.

which also won't happen because a salty ex employee posted the entire script for the game online after being sacked.
Erm, afaik Marc Laidlaw left, he was not sacked... Sources for this? He retired from Valve due to being old (which is bs tbh) and personal issues within the company. He was not just a salty employee, he was responsible for pretty much all of Half-Life's story... He didn't release the plotline right after he left, he waited until Valve HL2:ep3's NDA expired, which lasted a period of around 10 years.

Tbh, Marc did what Valve should've at least have done for the community... Give us a little bit of information of what's been left incomplete. But, Valve, being the cunts they now are, couldn't have bothered to finish a singleplayer game that was responsible for their success. Heck, even an official statement from them saying that HL was cancelled would've been better than this silence. But I digress.

I do agree that HL3 is long gone... Like you said, maybe Portal will enlighten us with what's left out of HL. Though at this point, I could only expect an online Portal trading card game coming from them.

You see, black mesa is an indication.
It is clear that black mesa is based on a new engine that we have not seen before in any of the half life games. A story writer, a new source engine, it's only the matter of time we see a new game. *Hope* is a strong word m8
What do you mean with indication?
Black Mesa is not developed by Valve! It's a mod made by the community... it's a very old one, that has been in development forever.
They are using a highly modified version of the Source Engine, made by themselves.

Well maybe you are correct but then why do they need to hire a story writer then ?
Most games, even if they are very simple in terms of lore, require a writer. Specially in games developed by big companies like Valve.
Games like TF2 do require loads of story writing... have you seen the comics? They have a universe and a lore behind it all. It's insane.
Same applies to DOTA2, afaik. Every champion has its own background story, and that requires a writer to do so!

Erik was only involved in HL2:ep1 and HL2:ep2... the real genius behind HL lore is Marc Laidlaw and the guy is long gone, unfortunately... (he did release a possible storyline for HL2:ep3 here http://www.marclaidlaw.com/epistle-3/ ).

Erik Wolpaw, like I said previously, is mostly responsible for Portal (which does take place in HL universe).

I wouldn't mind - in fact, I would love - if HL2:ep3 or HL3 was to be released soon, though I wouldn't expect much from this news alone.

Valve is having competition, so to get back to be the king of gaming it needs to produce games again. Don't forget that GabeN said in one of his interviews that the portal/halflife universe is not over yet and there is a future game set within that universe.
Competition? The king of gaming? Lol, they own the most profitable digital game platform in the world. They don't need to make games to earn money or any fancy title. They are dominating the industry with Steam, and they don't even need to make games to promote it anymore. Money always speaks higher in cases like this. It's sad, but it's true.

About GabeN saying that in interviews... how long was that? 4 years? 5 years? The main writer of the series posted a draft of the storyline online because, he, himself, was tired of all the waiting... Something is wrong with HL's development... and that sucks ass.

Now, to feed our emptiness of HL, here's a cool trailer of Black Mesa: Xen that is scheduled to release this year valve time, we all know how long these guys take to release something...!

He's mostly known for Portal, but yeah, it might be a good sign.
Some Half Life VR files and configs have been found within Artifact's game files, which means they have been developing something at least. But it might just be a HL2 VR port.

I, honestly, wouldn't mind getting any IP from Valve, as long as it isn't more TCG bullshit like Artifact, but realistically speaking, Erik Wolpaw's return probably means nothing.

Valve is getting all the moneyzz they want with Steam, no need to make games (though, perhaps Epic Games Launcher's competition causes a paradigm shift, or a resonance cascade >:D , and they start making games again).
